Running is one of the most natural activities to do. In fact, as land creatures the design of the human body is ideal for walking and running. For early humans running was a necessity. The increased speed experienced during running allowed hunters to catch fast moving prey to avoid starvation. Our early ancestors also ran during combat to attack their enemies in battle or retreat in defeat. Long distance runners were also used during this time to carry messages. For instance, these runners could spread the news that a battle had been won or carry a request for additional troops if the army found themselves outnumbered by an enemy.
By the time of the Ancient Olympic Games first held in 776 BC, the importance of running for exercising and improving physical fitness had already been established. In fact, the foot race was initially the only event held at the games. These early athletes did not compete for monetary prizes, however, but instead participated to honor their gods. Although these games ended in the 4thcentury, the development of modern running has been greatly inspired by these early games.
Today running is a major sport practiced for fun, recreation, and competition. The event is a part of the Modern Olympic Games and middle schools and high schools across the country give children a chance to compete. These student athletes can derive numerous cardiovascular benefits from running including controlling their weight, strengthening their bones, increasing endurance, and strengthening the heart for less health problems into adulthood. Mentally running can also help kids improve their self-confidence, develop healthy body images, sleep better at night, and do better in school. Due to its fun social atmosphere and its numerous health benefits running and track and field events can be a great sport for kids to get involved in, either on a casual basis or for those desiring to become serious athletes.
